PINJAR RACE WRAP – WA SOLO TITLES DECEMBER 2017

In what many people described as the best race of the season so far, Cameron Heeps used all his track craft to take a remarkable win in the WA 500 cc Solo Title. It was Heeps’ fourth win in WA longest running speedway championship. This was its ninetieth edition.

In the 250cc’s it would be South Australian Liam May who would take the Title and in the 125cc’s another South Australian Fraser Bowes was successful.

CAMERON HEEPS WINS 500cc TITLE

The ninetieth running of the WA Solo Championship attracted a field of fourteen riders. Heeps returned from the United Kingdom to defend his title, while Queenslanders Zane Keleher and Josh Coyne were in town as well.

Round 1 Winners: Marson, Coyne, Daniel Winchester, Heeps.

Round 2 Winners: Marson, Daniel Winchester, K Ballantyne, J Ziedas.

Round 3 Winners: Coyne, E Ballantyne, Heeps, Daniel Winchester.

Round 4 Winners: Heeps, Keleher, Daniel Winchester, Coyne. Winchester is now three from three.

Round 5 Winners: Daniel Winchester, Keleher, K Ballantyne, Heeps.
Daniel Winchester, Cameron Heeps and Josh Coyne are automatic qualifiers for the Championship race. Matt Marson, Kale Ballantyne, Zane Keleher and Jarryd Ziedas will contest the B Final with the winner going through to the Championship.

B Final: Keleher gets the best of the gate and takes the lead but two laps in Kale Ballantyne loops in turn four and is met very heavily by Jarryd Ziedas. Both bikes are damaged but fortunately Ballantyne and Ziedas are OK. Ballantyne is excluded from the re-run which Marson wins from Ziedas with Keleher falling mid race. Marson goes through to the Championship Final.

WA 500cc Solo Championship:Daniel Winchester as top point scorer elects to run out of gate one, Heeps selects gate four, Coyne two and Marson left with gate three. Winchester gets the better of the start with Heeps high on the track. One lap in and Winchester down low and running fast, with Heeps sweeping past Coyne and Marson to take second. Heeps stays half-track high with a hand full of throttle and closes on the tail of Winchester as the yellow is shown. Down the back straight for the final time and Heeps still half-track high levels up with Winchester and gets around him in turns three and four taking the lead and his fourth WA 500 cc Solo Championship.  Coyne is back in third with Marson in fourth. It was the race of the night!

MAY ALL THE WAY IN 250cc’s

Probably not a lot of people would have heard of Liam May before the WA 250cc Solo Championship, but the South Australian rider has added the WA Title to his cabinet trophy after a great display of racing on a circuit where he has never previously ridden

The top four qualifiers are Liam May (SA), Fraser Bowes (SA), Cordell Rogerson (Q), and Brad Gordon (WA)

WA 250cc SOLO CHAMPIONSHIP:

May out of gate one is straight to the lead with Fraser Bowes trying to find a way around him. Rogerson sits in third with Gordon in fourth. Then Bowes falls and his title chances are gone. May takes a good win with Rogerson prevailing over Gordon in the battle for second and third. May takes the title, the first time it has been run in WA since 2014-2015.

FRASER BOWES TOO GOOD IN 125cc’s

A field of eleven riders are on hand for the 125 Title, defending Champion Keynan Rew (Q) is not among them so a new Champ will be crowned. A very impressive interstate contingent has made the journey including Victoria’s Patrick Hamilton, Queensland’s Cordell Rogerson and South Australian’s Fraser and Patrick Bowes. WA is represented by Luke Killeen, Chris Bogdan, Xander Smith, Brad Gordon, Lincoln Worroll and the McDiarmid brothers Jack and Mitchell.

Round 1 Winners: Hamilton, P Bowes, Rogerson.

Round 2 Winners: No repeats from Round 1! Bogdan, Gordon, F Bowes. The points are tight.

Round 3 Winners: F Bowes, Hamilton, Gordon. All three tasting victory for the second time.

Round 4 Winners: F Bowes, L Killeen, C Rogerson.
Fraser Bowes and Cordell Rogerson have put enough points together to guarantee themselves a start in the 125cc Championship Final. So has Luke Killeen who has been consistent in all his heats. A points’ tie between Brad Gordon and Patrick Hamilton results in a run-off to determine who will be the fourth starter. Brad Gordon duly wins this and will take his place in the final.

WA 125cc SOLO CHAMPIONSHIP:

Fraser Bowes is out of gate one, Rogerson gate two; Killeen gate three and Gordon gate four. The first two laps of this race is a traffic jam, everyone is riding a different line and looking for best track position. Bowes leads Rogerson with Killeen ready to pounce, but no one is giving any room. Bowes holds on with Rogerson unable to find a way past. The last lap sees Bowes establish a small break over Rogerson and they finish in the order they stared at the gate Bowes, Rogerson, Killeen and Gordon- what a fabulous race.
Remarkably in the 125cc and 250cc Finals three riders featured in both races. Fraser Bowes, Cordell Rogerson and Brad Gordon with Rogerson the best performed with two second places.

SIDECAR RACING

After last meeting’s Sidecar Slam, the outfits were in the supporting role on the night with eight teams contesting eleven senior heats and a Final. Teams racing included Rocky Bryan/Matt Young (1), Ryan and Adam Fanderlinden, Ron Hankin/Scott Moffatt, Horrie Payne/Clinton Holmwood (2), Chad Harvey/ Morgan Cornwall, Reece Liptrott/Andy Gajek (5), Scott Charsley/Matt Reece (2), Clayton Mills/Jesse Thomas (2). The final saw the combination of Liptrott and Gajek complete an unbeaten night leading home Mills/Thomas and Charsley/Reece. Wins on the night are in brackets after the team names
The Junior Sidecars once again provided their share of excitement with the Fewster Brothers, Jack and Adam, prevailing in all their rides against the Jake Harvey/Tylar Solomon combination. McQuade and Murphy continue to experience engine and mechanical issues but it is great to see the boys on track.

PRE-PROGRAM

Another great pre-program with a well organised and enthusiastic group of riders and supporters began the excellent night of racing. 50cc PeeWees that we know who rode included Ryder Bolland, Jett Harvey, Jackson Kealy, Nate Rice and Kalgoorlie visitor Douglas Peterson, these riders love getting on the track and showing their skills - top effort team.
In the 125cc Stock Bikes Mitchell McDiarmid had a great night winning all his events except the one he fell over in. Lochlyn O’Brien, Axle McCarthy and Darcy Timmis all rode well in this division.
The 125cc Lites saw Max Harvey in great form although Axle McCarthy had the better of him once or twice. Darcy Timmis continues to improve in this company.
